Press Release
October 27, 2003 Carcross Summit a huge success!
On Friday, October 24th, the Carcross
Summit brought together 118 delegates to build a collective sense
of vision for
the Carcross area as a vibrant, sustainable tourism destination.
Organized by the Carcross/Tagish First Nation and White Pass & Yukon
Route(WP&YR), the Carcross Summit drew representatives from
Carcross, Tagish, Atlin, industry associations and all levels of
government.
"We are very pleased with the valuable contribution from
the Summit delegates," said Chief Andy Carvill. "We at
C/TFN have been working hard for years to develop a system of governance
while addressing our commitment to economic development. Working
with partners that appreciate the market readiness for tourism
in this region is exciting."
The Summit opened and closed with a prayer
and included remarks from Chief Andy Carvill, WP&YR Vice-President Michael Brandt,
Grand Chief Ed Schultz, MLA Patrick Rouble, Honourable Elaine Taylor,
Minister of Tourism and Larry Bagnell, MP. WP&YR and Four Mountains
Resort & Cultural Centre presented information about their
potential and respective business interests for the area. Most
of the day was dedicated to workshops for delegates to develop
a vision and action plan for tourism opportunities in the Carcross
area.
"The Summit was about so much more than bringing back the
train or building a resort and cultural centre," said Carvill. "These
business developments can happen only after we create an environment
that is conducive to economic and business development. This environment
is essential to developing new products for new markets with new
partnerships. The Summit has been a major step in getting all of
us closer to that reality. Working together at all levels is the
key to success."
On August 1, 2003 the C/TFN and the WP&YR signed a Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) to work to create a positive economic climate,
including the identification of specific opportunities for cooperation
and enhancing relationships with key stakeholders. C/TFN and WP&YR
will continue to work together under the MOU to deliver the outcomes
from the Summit to interested stakeholders and partners in economic
development. More information on the Summit can be found at www.wpyr.com/carcross.
